Install / Update Cinnamon Desktop 3.0.2 on Ubuntu 16.04 and Linux Mint Derivatives

Mint development team announced the Second maintenance release of Cinnamon 3.0.2 on May 10, 2022 which will fix desktop effects on dialogs, menus and more. Till now, Cinnamon 3.0.1 not yet release for public, I guess 3.0.2 will be release later a week of Cinnamon 3.0.1 public release. changes made on two files with 40 additions & 1 deletion.

Cinnamon is an open source project that provides users with a full featured desktop environment for GNU/Linux operating systems. It is a fork of the GNOME Shell user interface distributed with the GNOME project. It has been designed from the ground up to provide users with a traditional, yet advanced and modern graphical session for their Linux-based operating systems. It’s usually deployed on the Linux Mint distribution.

Designed for Linux Mint

Actually, the Cinnamon project has been developed by the same team of hard working people behind the Linux Mint project, out of frustration with the GNOME desktop environment. However, the desktop environment is not attached to the Linux Mint distribution, as it can be easily installed on other open source GNU/Linux operating system, straight from their default software repositories or using third-party ones provided by the community.

Cinnamon 3.0.2 comes two weeks after the release of Cinnamon 3.0.1, which only fixed the alignment of the rating number in the “Get more” pages for extensions, to no longer be covered by the overlay scrollbars, and according to the internal changelog attached at the end of the article it brings multiple bug fixes.

Among the changes, we can mention that Cinnamon 3.0.2 prevents desktop effects from being used on menus and dialogs if the “desktop-effects” setting is disabled, introduces cache generated thumbnails, fixes a declaration of alias variable in the Power applet, as well as a call on null object for the Window list.

Fixes on Cinnamon 3.0.2 Maintenance release
  • Cache generated thumbnails
  • Fix desktop effects on dialogs and menus This prevents desktop effects on dialogs and menus from being used if desktop-effects is turned off. It’s like already like this in the effects settings dialog.
  • Power applet: Fixed declaration of alias variable
  • Window list: Fixed call on null object
  • Fix handling of device icon where gicon is None
  • cinnamon-settings: Don’t set the stack switcher to use the main settings stack on creation This is causing visual glitches in a lot of gtk themes when changing from the main icon view to a page that displays the stack switcher
  • Fix highlighting not working correctly for multiple instances of an applet
  • ExtensionCore.py: Don’t break when an xlet provides a bad icon file.
  • Added null conditional to return empty array when get_devices returns null
  • accessibility settings: don’t use package kit for now when looking for assistance programs that are installed. Just look for their binaries, and notify if not installed. Watch the bin folders in case the user installs the dependency and doesn’t restart cinnamon settings.
  • Add a close button to the speaker test dialog
  • Fix image close crash
